Byron Aughenbaugh
With the eye of an artist and the mind of a scientist, Byron went to school on a music scholarship, studied geology and became a science teacher, tennis player and an avid photographer. His photography earned dozens of awards, and he had numerous publication credits. In 1989, he got the first clear daytime pictures of the super-secret F-117A, the world’s first stealth fighter. Time Magazine was hours from running Byron’s photo on the cover when the Romanian revolution erupted and stole the headlines.
Byron was born in Ohio and went to college in Tucson, Arizona. It was there that he developed his love of photography – particularly lightning photography. He shot the monsoons in southern Arizona every summer since 1956. With many thousands of images, he may well have created the largest portfolio of lightning photographs in the world.
Byron was often found judging photography contests throughout southern California, playing bridge, or traveling the southwest in search of secret military aircraft and interesting weather.
